The Department of Tourism (DOT), in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos, announced support for the upcoming Halal Expo Philippines and the inaugural Philippines International Health and Wellness Congress in November 2024.
DOT Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the event’s potential to attract buyers from the Middle East and other countries, positioning the Philippines as a health and wellness destination that is also Halal and Muslim-friendly.
Frasco received commendations for her leadership in promoting Halal tourism in the country during a House Committee on Appropriations hearing on the DOT’s proposed 2025 budget, according to a report on Manila Standard.
Frasco elaborated on the government’s efforts to appeal to Muslim travelers, including new standards for accommodations, restaurants, and services tailored to Muslim needs, and a partnership with Megaworld Corp. to convert 13 properties nationwide into Muslim-friendly spaces.
Frasco also mentioned the ongoing expansion of Halal-friendly establishments across the country, currently at 289, and efforts to promote Mindanao’s rich Halal cuisine through events like Bismillah.
Infrastructure improvements, such as tourist rest areas in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, and collaborations with the BARMM Ministry of Tourism, aim to boost accessibility and service quality.
The DOT is also working to strengthen ties with Brunei, Qatar, and other countries, reflecting its commitment to making the Philippines an inclusive destination for Muslim travelers.
