The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao took a significant step in advancing Halal awareness on December 12, when it hosted the Davao Halal Forum to promote collaboration and growth within the region’s Halal industry.
Led by DTI Regional Director Romeo L. Castañaga, the forum brought together key stakeholders, including local businesses and government representatives, to explore the vast opportunities that Halal certification offers for the region’s MSMEs.
The event featured an insightful presentation from Raison Dimaampao Arobinto, representing the DTI’s Halal Central Office, who discussed the potential of the Halal market for Davao’s MSMEs. Arobinto emphasized that Halal-certified products present a unique opportunity for local businesses to expand both in domestic and international markets. He highlighted how Halal practices could open doors to new customer bases while ensuring high standards of quality and safety.
“Davao’s robust industries—ranging from agribusiness to tourism—are naturally aligned with Halal principles, making it an ideal region to foster Halal awareness and growth,” Arobinto said.
“By tapping into the Halal market, MSMEs can not only access a rapidly growing global consumer base but also enhance their competitiveness in the marketplace.”
The forum also provided a platform for private sector stakeholders, including the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Davao Chapter, to share their initiatives and success stories in integrating Halal practices into their business models. These local enterprises discussed the positive impact that Halal certification has had on their operations, further encouraging others to consider the benefits of certification for their products.
Looking ahead, DTI Davao, in partnership with the Halal Development and Training Organization (HDTO), plans to launch a Halal certification program for at least 10 MSMEs in 2025. This initiative aims to assist local businesses in navigating the certification process and improve their marketability within the growing Halal sector. The program will play a key role in boosting the region’s Halal industry and contributing to the overall economic development of Davao and Mindanao.
With its growing importance in global trade, the Halal market presents significant opportunities for businesses in Davao, which is already a key player in the agribusiness, tourism, and hospitality sectors. As the region embraces Halal practices, it strengthens its position as a center for sustainable, high-quality products that meet the needs of diverse consumers.
