In a significant move towards ensuring the availability of Halal-certified meat products in Davao, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) and the Mindanao Halal Authority (MinHa) conducted a thorough audit of the Malagos Double A Slaughterhouse.
This audit is a key part of the slaughterhouse’s application process for Halal certification, which, if granted, will make it the first Double-A Halal-certified facility in the region.
The comprehensive audit involved several key procedures aimed at ensuring the slaughterhouse meets the strict standards set for Halal food processing. Auditors began by reviewing the facility’s Halal certification application and the supporting documentation. They then conducted an inspection of the processing areas to confirm they were free from contamination and met required cleanliness standards. In addition, the auditors examined the sourcing and handling of animals, ensuring they were treated ethically and in accordance with Halal principles.
The inspection team also evaluated the tools and equipment used in the slaughtering process to ensure they were compatible with Halal practices. Interviews were conducted with staff members to assess their knowledge and training in Halal procedures, and key personnel were questioned to verify their commitment to maintaining high standards of Halal compliance.
Furthermore, the auditors checked the records related to Halal practices to ensure that all processes were properly documented in accordance with established guidelines.
According to the audit findings submitted by MinHa to the NCMF’s Davao Regional Office, the Malagos Slaughterhouse demonstrated compliance with the Philippine National Standards for Halal Slaughtering (PNS/BAFS 102:2016), which outlines the necessary procedures for the Halal slaughtering of ruminants. Based on this, the MinHa auditors, led by Engr. Mohammad Ali Suib, recommended the issuance of a Halal certificate for the facility, contingent on the management addressing a few minor recommendations.
This audit represents an important step towards meeting the growing demand for Halal meat products in the region. If the certification is granted, the Malagos Double A Slaughterhouse will not only be the first Halal-certified Double-A facility in Davao but will also serve as a model for other establishments in the region seeking Halal certification.
