DOST XII bolsters Halal assurance in Mindanao with training on Halal Assurance System and cGMP compliance

The Department of Science and Technology Region XII (DOST XII) led a comprehensive training on the Halal Assurance System (HAS) and Conformity Assessment for Halal and current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, Cotabato.

This workshop aimed to elevate standards in halal manufacturing and align local products with global halal certification requirements.

Organized through the Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) – Cotabato, the training is part of DOST XII’s ongoing project, “Commercialization of Chevon Products and Standardization of Processing Center,” which focuses on the mass production of halal-certified Chevon products such as Tapa, Tocino, Corned, Kagikit, and Cracklings.

Ms. Maritzu S. Sinolinding, Supervising Science Research Specialist and Halal Focal Person of DOST XII, led the training, sharing insights on halal compliance standards and food safety protocols. Sinolinding emphasized the importance of HAS and cGMP standards in ensuring product quality, safety, and market competitiveness, particularly within the halal industry. The workshop included hands-on activities, enabling participants to apply the concepts in real-time.

Among those in attendance were Dr. Jurmahid C. Imlan, Director of the USM Agricultural Research and Development Center; Dr.
Jalaloden B. Marohom, Project Leader; and Dr. Josephine R. Magalbin, faculty and researcher at USM.

In addition to the training, Sinolinding conducted a Halal Conformity Assessment of USM’s Halal Science R&D Processing Center, advising on further improvements to meet halal and cGMP standards. This assessment reinforces USM’s commitment to quality halal production practices.

DOST XII Regional Director Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, represented by Provincial Director Michael Mayo, expressed strong support for the initiative, underscoring the partnership between DOST XII and USM in advancing science and technology in Mindanao.

This training represents a significant step in strengthening halal assurance in the region, helping local products meet international demand for halal-certified goods. Through such initiatives, DOST XII continues to enhance food safety and production standards, moving Mindanao closer to becoming a leading provider of halal products and services.
