DOST XII pushes Halal certification for MSMEs, coconut farmers in global market drive

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) XII is spearheading efforts to raise Halal awareness and certification among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and coconut farmers in Mindanao. At a seminar held on October 23 in General Santos City, DOST XII shared critical guidelines on Halal standards and certification processes, aiming to help Filipino producers tap into the growing $7.7 trillion global Halal market.

Ms. Maritzu S. Sinolinding, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST XII, served as the resource speaker, covering essential topics like the Halal Assurance System, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), DOST’s Halal Science and Technology programs, and the certification process. Participants gained a deeper understanding of these practices, which are critical for MSMEs and farmers looking to achieve Halal certification.

Engr. Sammy P. Malawan, DOST XII Regional Director, emphasized the significance of empowering Muslim Filipino producers, contributing to both economic inclusion and national competitiveness within the global Halal market. This initiative aligns with DOST XII’s broader Halal programs and services that promote science and technology for economic advancement.

This seminar, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) XII, reflects a sustained commitment to positioning the Philippines as a valuable contributor to the global Halal economy.
