Qatari investments could boost PH Halal sector- DTI

Qatari investments are poised to play a crucial role in developing the Philippines’ experiential tourism sector and enhancing its halal-preparedness, according to a key official from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2024, Aleem Siddiqui M. Guiapal, Director of the DTI’s Halal Industry Development and Trade Office, highlighted the opportunities for Qatar to invest in the country’s halal-related projects.

“The Philippines has the third-largest Muslim population in Southeast Asia, with about 12 million people, providing a ready market for halal products and services,” Guiapal said.

He noted that the Philippine government has already implemented laws supporting halal product development, investment incentives, and the establishment of Islamic banks.

Guiapal emphasized that there is strong political will from the Philippine government to advance the halal industry.

lPresident Marcos has shown strong support for the industry, establishing a ‘green lane’ for halal as a ‘sunrise industry,’” he said.

The DTI is currently in discussions with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) to organize an investment roadshow in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

“This roadshow aims to explore, promote, and identify investment opportunities across various sectors,” Guiapal noted.

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco has been actively promoting a “Muslim-friendly Philippines” campaign, which aligns with the DTI’s initiatives to develop the halal industry.

“We are pushing the ‘Halal-Friendly Philippines’ tagline as part of a comprehensive, inclusive, all-of-government approach to support the industry’s growth,” Guiapal said.
