The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched the National Halal Industry and Development Office (NHIDO), marking a major milestone in the Philippines’ ambition to become a leader in the global Halal industry by 2025. This initiative is part of the country’s broader strategy to enhance its domestic Halal market while expanding the export potential of Filipino products and services.
The NHIDO will serve as the central coordinating body for all Halal development efforts, streamlining initiatives and fostering collaboration across various stakeholders. The office’s creation aims to strengthen the Philippines’ position in the Halal sector by unifying industry players and ensuring a more efficient, cohesive approach to growth.
A key priority for the NHIDO is to simplify the process of Halal certification and standards, making it more accessible for medium, small, and micro enterprises (MSMEs). By offering expanded capacity-building programs and specialized training, the office aims to equip local businesses with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the Halal market.
In addition, the NHIDO will spearhead the nationwide “Halal-Friendly Philippines” campaign. This initiative is designed to increase awareness of Halal products, not only within the Muslim community but also across broader markets. Public awareness programs will be rolled out through various media channels and community outreach activities, aiming to dispel misconceptions and highlight the economic potential of the Halal industry.
The NHIDO is also committed to strengthening the Halal value chain in the Philippines. It will collaborate with local government units and relevant agencies to improve governance and build Halal-compliant infrastructure, such as certified slaughterhouses and cold storage facilities. Additionally, the office will focus on regional integration to enhance supply chains across the Philippines, creating efficient trade hubs in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
A crucial part of the NHIDO’s strategy is the development of a comprehensive Halal product database. This database will serve as a key resource for planning, monitoring, and evaluation, ensuring that the country’s Halal industry remains responsive to market needs and trends.
As the NHIDO embarks on its mission to advance the Halal industry, it will also manage the administrative and financial operations necessary to sustain its long-term objectives, ensuring that the Philippines remains competitive in this rapidly growing global market.
The establishment of the NHIDO signals a new chapter for the Philippines as it positions itself as a key player in the global Halal economy, one that promises to bring economic growth, foster inclusivity, and create new opportunities for businesses and communities across the nation.
