DTI, partner agencies educate Zamboanga del Sur MSMEs on Halal certification

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Zamboanga del Sur, in collaboration with key government agencies, hosted an educational seminar on Halal certification for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The initiative seeks to expand market opportunities for local businesses and promote inclusivity in the province’s growing food and health sectors.

The seminar began with an address from DTI Provincial Director Marlon Alabata, CPA, who emphasized the importance of Halal certification in enhancing business competitiveness and fostering high standards in health and wellness.

In the morning session, Ar-Chadee Bahjin, DTI IX Halal focal person, provided an overview of Republic Act 10817, which established the Philippine Halal Export Development and Promotion Program.

Bahjin discussed the law’s relevance to local entrepreneurs looking to expand into Halal markets.

Yasser N. Sarip from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region IX then presented on the DA’s Halal Food Industry Development Program, outlining government support for Halal food production in the region.

This was followed by NMIS IX Halal focal representative, Ahmad Lingga, who discussed the National Meat Inspection Service’s initiatives to align meat production with Halal standards.

In the afternoon, a session led by the Bangsamoro Provincial Consultative Council Inc. focused on Halal certification services, detailing the requirements and benefits for MSMEs seeking certification.

The seminar’s interactive sessions demonstrated local entrepreneurs’ enthusiasm for adopting Halal practices, aligning with DTI’s vision for inclusive growth and global competitiveness in Zamboanga del Sur’s MSME sector.
