The Philippines marked a significant presence at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2024, achieving nearly triple its sales target, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
In an interview with People’s Television (PTV), DTI Halal Industry Development Office Director Aleem Guiapal shared the country’s milestones and plans for further engagement in the global halal market.
“This is one of the biggest delegations we’ve ever had,” Guiapal noted.
“With 91 members from the Philippines, we were one of 66 nations represented.” The delegation included 20 Filipino companies, contributing to the impressive sales of ₱447 million, equivalent to US$7.9 million.
The Philippine pavilion showcased a diverse array of products, ranging from agricultural to processed goods.
“Our top-selling items were coconut products like virgin coconut oil, coconut spread, and the innovative Immuno Plus, a ginger and turmeric drink that boosts the immune system,” Guiapal shared. Other notable products included pineapple, banana, durian, kangkong chips, cosmetics, and coffee beans.
The DTI, alongside various government agencies, is actively supporting the halal sector through a whole-of-government approach, aiming to boost the halal certification of local MSMEs. Guiapal emphasized,
“The Philippines is promoting a ‘Halal-Friendly Philippines Campaign,’ collaborating with agencies such as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Science and Technology, and the Bangsamoro Economic Zone Authority to create a supportive ecosystem for halal trade and investment.”
