PH-Malaysia relations highlight Halal industry’s role in economic growth

Malaysian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, delivered a lecture on September 26, 2024, at Ateneo de Manila University, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The discussion focused on the growing potential of the halal industry as a key driver of economic cooperation.

Ambassador Castelino highlighted how the halal industry, powered by the global Islamic economy and a rapidly expanding Muslim population, offers significant opportunities for both Malaysia and the Philippines. With digital connectivity transforming how consumers access halal-certified products, he emphasized that both countries can benefit from the rising demand for these goods worldwide.

As a leader in halal exports, Malaysia has established itself as a global hub for halal manufacturing. The ambassador shared examples of how Malaysia’s halal exports have grown in recent years, driven by technological advancements and strategic investments. He underscored Malaysia’s efforts in digitalization, which have made it easier for Muslim consumers to find halal products.

Castelino encouraged the Philippines to strengthen its collaboration with Malaysia in the halal sector, noting that the country has the potential to become a key player in the Islamic economy. By expanding halal certification and manufacturing capabilities, the Philippines can tap into the growing international market for halal products.

Accompanying the ambassador were Ms. Nadhira Mohammad Zanudin and Ms. Nurfarahliza Putri Naaim Yazid, Counsellors at the Embassy of Malaysia. They were welcomed by Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, and other university officials.

Following the lecture, an engaging open forum allowed students to interact with the ambassador, who provided insightful responses about the halal industry’s role in strengthening economic ties between the Philippines and Malaysia.
