DOT receives Halal Tourism Icon Award at Travel Expo Sale 2024

The Department of Tourism (DOT) was honored with the prestigious Halal Tourism Icon award during the conclusion of the three-day Travel Expo Sale 2024 at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City, on Sunday, September 29.

In a report on Daily Tribune, DOT Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa Abubakar received the award, alongside prominent diplomats including Brunei Ambassador Megawati Mana, Malaysian Ambassador Dato Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, Lao Ambassador Sonexay Vannaxay, and Vietnam Ambassador Lai Thai Binh.

The recognition was presented by Global Tourism Business Association (GTBA) President Michelle Taylan, acknowledging DOT’s continued efforts to promote and develop halal tourism in the Philippines.

The Halal Tourism Icon award celebrates DOT’s initiatives to position the country as a prime destination for Muslim travelers. Undersecretary Abubakar, who has been at the forefront of these efforts, expressed her gratitude for the recognition, noting that it further strengthens the Philippines’ commitment to inclusive tourism development.

The Travel Expo Sale 2024, which gathered local and international tourism stakeholders, highlighted the growing significance of halal tourism in the global market, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Through collaborations with neighboring countries, the Philippines is steadily expanding its halal-certified services and accommodations to cater to the increasing demand from Muslim tourists.

The event concluded with a call for sustained efforts to enhance the halal tourism industry, as well as further engagement with international partners to strengthen the Philippines’ position as a leading destination for Muslim travelers.
