Boracay to open private beach for muslims

Boracay is set to open a special beach dedicated to Muslim travelers in its effort to become a more inclusive travel destination, a Department of Tourism (DOT) official announced Friday.

The private cove, located within Boracay Newcoast, will be launched on Sept. 10 specifically for Muslim women.

“Some Muslims can swim in public, but others prefer a more private setting. I’m sure those currently swimming in public would also choose this private area if given the option,” said DOT Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar, speaking at the Philippine-Malaysia Art Expo opening in Makati City.

This initiative was suggested by foreign diplomats based in the Philippines, including the ambassadors of Malaysia and Brunei.

“They previously had a meeting in Boracay and mentioned to the mayor the need for a private area for Muslims,” Valderrosa-Abubakar said.

“When we presented the idea to the mayor of Aklan, he agreed and found an area in collaboration with Megaworld, which has a coast area that could be turned into a private cove for Muslim women.”

The Boracay Newcoast, located in the northeastern part of the island, also houses the Savoy, one of the Philippine hotels that recently earned a Halal kitchen certification.

“President Bongbong Marcos mentioned in the State of the Nation Address the importance of Halal and Islamic tradition, so we’re pushing for more Halal offerings in the Philippines,” Valderrosa-Abubakar added.
