MinDa chief highlights Halal sector role for Mindanao economic growth

Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) Secretary Leo Tereso Magno emphasized the significant role of the Halal sector in Mindanao’s economic growth, identifying it as a “priority agenda” within the Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Magno’s statement followed the successful Halal Industry Conference held in Manila last week.

He highlighted the potential for establishing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) focused on Halal food production, which could attract investors and boost local economies, particularly in Mindanao and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The MinDa chief commended the recent trade investment and Halal conference initiated by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) as evidence of the private sector’s commitment to supporting government efforts.

Magno also described this collaboration as an “inspiring development” that underscores the active role of the private sector in the increasingly market-driven BIMP-EAGA.

“This progress means more work for us in government, as we need to sustain private sector efforts through sound and facilitative policies,” Magno added.

He also acknowledged the steady support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who advocates for peace and order in Mindanao as a foundation for the region’s development.
